Esther Norman

Using hand building techniques, Raku firing process and drawing inspiration from our maritime heritage, I build fishing, sailing and tug boats that are ready to launch into new adventures. The raku process lends itself to the finish pieces having a lived, aged feeling which gives another textural dimension with a patina of age. I have a collection of old Indian, Vietnamese and Balinese wood blocks and enjoy using these to imprint texture to a surface which is transformed in the raku firing.

Recently I have experimented with making boxes, echoing the traditional Japanese Inro boxes, impressing leaves into the wet clay and hand painting with underglaze , finishing them of, when fired with handmade tassels and cords.
